The leg of the 2021 FINA World Cup in Doha ended yesterday, which means we only have one more city to visit, with Kazan, Russia, on the agenda for October 28-30.
Unlike past years where we would have seen at least half a dozen stages, this time around we only have 4 matches carved into the International Swimming League (ISL) season 3 break. The playoffs for that championship will begin next month.
Official schedule of the 2021 FINA World Cup:
- October 1-3 (Phase 1) – Berlin, GER
- October 7-9 (Phase 1) – Budapest, HUN
- 21-23 October (Phase 2) – Doha, QAT
- October 28-30 (Phase 2) – Kazan, RUS
Here are our top 3 takeaways from this weekend’s action in Doha.
Daiya Seto Nails 200 Vittoria Breast
We saw some new talent enter the arena this time around, with the likes of Japan’s Daiya Seto and South Korea Hwang Sunwoo making their presence known.
27-year-old Seto, who has just officially declared himself a professional athlete this week, has tackled his IM and fly events, but has also taken a notable 200 breaststroke win here in Doha.
Competing against the reigning European champion in short course and twice Olympic silver medal in breaststroke Arno Kamminga of the Netherlands, Seto kept pace, finishing first on the wall in the 200m chest in a time of 2: 01.65.
Opening in 59.04 and taking him home in 1: 02.61, Seto’s time dropped just .35 off his Japanese national record of 2: 01.30 that the man set in Singapore 4 years ago. Kamminga settled for silver here in Doha in the time of 2: 02.05.
Hwang Sunwoo It scores a short course
As for 18 year old Hwang from South Korea, he won the highly anticipated men’s 200m freestyle final.
Against the field that included the 18-year-old colleague and current junior world record holder Matt Sates of South Africa, Hwang landed a free 2 winning effort of 1: 41.17 at Sates’ 1: 41.33. In doing so, Hwang nearly broke the legendary national record of 1: 41.03 Park Tae Hwan set the course for gold at the 2018 FINA Short Course World Championships.
Although Sates’ WJR stands at a quick sub-1: 41 of 1: 40.65 from Berlin, Hwang has rarely swam short course meters, with this competition serving as a baseline for the rising star who has already made two finals Freestyle Olympics in Tokyo this summer.
Tom Shields does not give up
30 years Tom Shields he has already amassed more wins in these first 3 stages of the World Cup, but his 50m volley here represented his third consecutive win in the event.
After recording the results of 22.09 in Berlin and 21.99 in Budapest, with the latter setting a new American record, Shields yesterday closed his hat-trick with a result of 22.22. This overtook an Australian in charge Kyle Chalmers which only touched .02 behind in 22.24 for a new national record while Hungarian Szebasztian Szabo so what’s right there at 22.26.
After past mental health battles, Shields’ perseverance is reflected in his performances, with the former Cal Bear appearing to truly enjoy every race he swims during this period of his life.
